Summary: Guilty Pleasures is the first novel of the very long Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series. Anita, a young woman who lives in St. Louis, is an animator and a court approved vampire slayer who works nights mainly re-animating the dead. She is forced by Nikolaos, the Master of the City, to investigate a series of vampire murders. Master vampire, Jean Claude, begins to cultivate a relationship with her interested in more than just her unique professional skills. Only by teaming up with Jean Claude and a vampire slaying associate is Anita able to bring the murderer to justice and survive to fight another day.
My Thoughts: As the first novel in a 25 book series, Guilty Pleasures does a great job of capturing your attention with well-developed characters and a captivating world. The heroine is a relatable, strong, sassy woman who is an all-around bad ass. The story moves along at a nice pace and has a well thought out plot line providing readers with an exhilarating take on urban fantasy.
I love how Hamilton makes Anita tough and that the heroine in this series isn’t just another ‘damsel in distress;’ there are way too many of those out there in the vampire/fantasy field. She also does a great job of making Nikolaos scary as fuck, Jean Claude despicable, Edward mysterious and intimidating, and Willie just your everyday loser. I appreciate that not all of the supernatural beings in this series are perfect, beautiful and outrageously successful; it adds a sense of complexity to life in this world of vampires.
I hope the rest of the series can keep up with this remarkable start.
I definitely think this book deserves 5 out of 5 stars!
